Short answer: Ask one question of every guarantee: does it cover a lower price on the site you booked? Booking.com, Agoda, Hotwire and Capital One Travel match a cheaper offer elsewhere. Expedia and Hotels.com ended their hotel price guarantee on 28 July 2026 (O4). Only Priceline's Pay Now lane refunds an own-site drop, and only for 24 hours (O8).
That distinction is missing from almost every comparison table. A guarantee that only matches another website does nothing when the rate falls on the page where you booked. A guarantee with a 24-hour window does nothing three weeks later, when most drops actually arrive (M3).
So the ranking has two lanes: what covers a cheaper offer elsewhere, and what covers a drop at home. Here is every major one, checked as of October 2026.
Do this now

- Open the confirmation and note the rate type — free cancellation or non-refundable (R3).
- Write down the booking time. Most guarantees run a 24-hour clock from it (O8, C1, C2).
- Search the identical room, dates, guests and cancellation terms on another site (O1).
- Screenshot the cheaper offer and copy the link while it is still bookable (O1).
- File with the site you booked, not with the site that showed the lower price (O1).
- If the 24 hours are gone, stop filing and check your cancellation deadline instead (R1, R3).
The best hotel booking site price guarantee compared
| Site | Cheaper offer elsewhere | Drop on its own site | Window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Booking.com | Yes — refund of the difference (O1) | No (O3) | While the other offer is online and available (O1) |
| Expedia / Hotels.com | Mostly no — the Hotel Price Guarantee ended 28 July 2026 (O4) | No | Some One Key members who joined before 31 October 2025 may still qualify (O7) |
| Agoda | Yes — match or AgodaCash, Agoda decides which (O5) | No | Claim with the competing offer as evidence (O5) |
| Priceline | Yes for Express Deals — 200% of the difference (O8) | Yes — Pay Now bookings for VIP members, 100% of the difference (O8) | 24 hours from booking; Express Deals until midnight before travel (O8) |
| Hotwire | Yes — Hot Rate bookings only (O9) | No | 24 hours, one refund per household per six weeks (O9) |
| Capital One Travel | Yes — hotels, flights and cars (O10) | No — Price Drop Protection is flights only (O10) | Whenever you report a cheaper itinerary (O10) |
| Chain direct (Marriott, Hilton) | Yes — match plus an extra 25% off (C1, C2) | No (C6) | 24 hours from booking (C1, C2) |
Read that table by column, not by row. The middle column is the one that decides most real cases, because most people are not comparing sites — they are staring at a cheaper price on the same one (O3, C6).
Which site covers a drop on its own pages?
Priceline is the exception, and it is narrower than the headline suggests. Booking a hotel with the Pay Now option as a VIP member, finding a lower rate on Priceline itself within 24 hours, and claiming 100% of the difference is a real own-site route (O8).
Express Deals work differently. Those are the opaque bookings where the hotel is hidden until you pay. There the refund is 200% of the difference, capped at the total reservation cost, and the claim runs until midnight before travel (O8). The comparison deal cannot itself be another Express Deal, and rates from Agoda or Booking.com do not count (O8).
Notice what this is: a correction window measured in hours, not a watch. It pays if you spot the drop the same day. It pays nothing if the rate slides three weeks before check-in, which is when revenue systems tend to move (M3).
Where each site stops
Booking.com excludes opaque sites, loyalty, coupon and login prices, Partner offer bookings, cancelled bookings and single-unit properties — and it has sole discretion over the outcome (O2). A drop on Booking.com's own page is not a price-match case at all (O3).
Expedia and Hotels.com ended their Hotel Price Guarantee on 28 July 2026 in the One Key overhaul, with no replacement announced (O4). The nuance matters: travellers who joined One Key before 31 October 2025 may still qualify on eligible bookings, and the Canadian site stopped applying it to new standalone bookings from 17 August 2026 (O7). Check your own region and enrolment date before you assume anything.
Agoda matches or refunds, and decides whether the money comes back as cash or as AgodaCash (O5). Either way you need the competing offer as evidence (O5).
Hotwire only covers Hot Rate bookings — the opaque ones — and only for an identical hotel, dates and room type at a rate available to the general public (O9). Loyalty, AAA, AARP, corporate and group rates are excluded, and the original reservation is not cancelled when the refund lands (O9).
Capital One Travel runs two programmes with confusingly similar names. Price Drop Protection is automatic, free, and scoped to flights only. Hotels fall under the Price Match, which you have to file yourself (O10).
Why the flexible rate beats every guarantee
Every route above is a claim with a deadline set by someone else. A free-cancellation rate is different: it is a right you already hold, with a deadline printed on your confirmation (R3).
That deadline is usually 24 to 72 hours before check-in, set by the property in its local time (R3). Until it passes, a cheaper rate anywhere — including on the same site — is yours to take. The order never changes: confirm the new rate is the same room, board, guests and dates and is also free to cancel, book it, wait for the confirmation, then cancel the old booking (R1).
Rank any guarantee in four questions
In this order- Does it cover a drop on the site you booked, or only a cheaper offer elsewhere? (O3, C6)
- What is the window — hours from booking, or days until check-in? (O8, C1, R3)
- Is the comparison rate publicly bookable, or behind a login? (O2, O9)
- If the claim fails, is your own rate still free to cancel? (R1, R2)
How much is actually at stake
RatePunk's analysis of 28,000 tracked bookings found a lower rate appeared on 57% of them between booking and check-in (M1). Pruvo's figure is roughly 40%, with an average saving near $60 (M2). Fermata's analysis of 92,235 room-stays put the median drop at 8.2% among the stays that fell (M7).
On a sample €600 booking, 8.2% is about €49. That is worth a ten-minute rebooking on a flexible rate. It is rarely worth a claim with a 24-hour window you have already missed.
The full per-site checklists are in Booking.com price dropped after booking, Agoda's guarantee explained, Priceline's refund rule and Hotwire's Hot Rate rule. Expedia's story is in the end of Expedia's guarantee.
If you are filing today, the claim template saves you the drafting. And if the drop is on your own booking rather than a rival site, the general method is in hotel price dropped after booking.

FAQ
Which hotel booking site has the best price-drop guarantee? It depends on the clock. Priceline's Pay Now lane is the only one that refunds a drop on its own site, and only within 24 hours (O8). For any drop that arrives later, a free-cancellation rate plus a rebooking beats every guarantee (R1).
Does Booking.com price match a lower price on Booking.com itself? No. Its We Price Match compares your reservation against a cheaper offer on another website (O1, O3). On a flexible rate the route is to book the new price and cancel the old booking (R1).
Is Expedia's hotel price guarantee really gone? The Hotel Price Guarantee ended on 28 July 2026, with no replacement announced (O4). One Key members who joined before 31 October 2025 may still qualify on eligible bookings, and regional pages differ, so check yours before assuming (O7).
Does Hotwire cover a normal hotel booking? No. The Low-Price Guarantee applies to Hot Rate — opaque — bookings only, with a 24-hour claim window and one refund per household per six weeks (O9).
Can I claim after check-in? Chain guarantees stop at check-in (C2). Booking.com may amend the price or tell you how to claim the difference after your stay (O1). Priceline's Express Deals window closes at midnight before travel (O8).
What if my booking is non-refundable? Then a cheaper rate cannot be taken without losing money, and the only route left is a guarantee that compares another website (R2, C6). File inside the window or accept the rate you have.
