Short answer: Booking.com's We Price Match covers a cheaper price for the same room on another website. It does not cover a drop on Booking.com itself. If the price fell on Booking.com, book the new rate, then cancel the old booking before its deadline. For a claim, send the link and screenshot and let Booking.com decide.
Those are two different cases, and mixing them up is the most common mistake. One is a claim against another website. The other is the case this page exists for: Booking.com price dropped after booking. Here the fix is a rebooking on the site you already use. New to this? Start with the hotel price dropped after booking playbook.
Do this now

- Open your confirmation email and find the free-cancellation deadline. Write down the date, the time and the hotel's local time zone.
- Check the price again on Booking.com and on two other websites. Note every number and where you saw it.
- Sort your case. Is another website cheaper (a price-match claim) or is Booking.com itself cheaper (a rebooking)?
- For a claim, capture proof now: a link and a screenshot, while the other offer is still online (O1).
- For a rebooking, book the new rate first. Book only if it is also free to cancel, and keep both bookings open (R1).
- Cancel the old booking only after the new confirmation arrives and check that no fee was charged (R1).
Total time: about ten minutes. The order matters more than the speed.
The safe order to rebook
| Step | Action | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Check the new rate matches your booking — same hotel, room, board, guests, dates (R1) | A cheaper rate for a different room is not a saving |
| 2 | Check the new rate is free to cancel too (R1) | The new booking must be as flexible as the old one |
| 3 | Book the new rate and keep both bookings open | You hold the room before you give one up |
| 4 | Wait for the new confirmation email | A booking is not real until it is confirmed |
| 5 | Cancel the old booking before its deadline (R3) | After the deadline you are committed |
| 6 | Check the cancellation email for fees (R1) | You want a zero-fee confirmation in writing |
Never cancel the old booking before the new one is confirmed (R1). Rates and availability move all day. The price you saw at 09:00 can be gone by 09:20 — and then you would hold nothing. The mechanics are the same on every site: see how to rebook a hotel at a lower price.
The order only works on a rate with free cancellation, before its deadline (H11). If your rate is flexible, the whole rebooking costs you nothing but ten minutes.
What does We Price Match cover?
Booking.com's We Price Match lets you claim the difference if you find your reservation cheaper on another website (O1). "Another website" is the key phrase. This is not a general promise that your price will be the lowest.
The competing offer must match your booking on all of these points (O1):
| Must match on | Detail |
|---|---|
| Property and room | Same hotel, same accommodation type |
| Dates and guests | Same nights, same number of occupants |
| Cancellation policy | Same cancellation terms as your reservation |
| Meal plan | Same board — breakfast, half board, and so on |
| Currency | Priced in the property's local currency |
| Availability | Online and bookable when Booking.com checks it (O1) |
You file through the confirmation page — look for "Found this room cheaper elsewhere?" — or through Customer Service. Attach the link and a screenshot of the cheaper offer (O1).
What is excluded from a price match?
The terms also list what does not qualify, as of October 2026 (O2):
| Excluded | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Opaque sites | Sites that reveal the hotel name only after payment |
| Loyalty, coupon or login prices | Member-only rates you could not book as a walk-up |
| "Partner offer" bookings | Reservations marked as partner offers |
| Cancelled bookings | If you cancel the booking, the claim goes with it |
| Single-unit properties | Private homes with a single unit to rent |
Booking.com has sole discretion over the outcome. It may amend the price of your reservation, or tell you how to claim the difference after your stay (O1). File early and keep the screenshot. A price match is one company's policy — and policies disappear. Expedia ended its own guarantee in July 2026 (O4). The expedia price guarantee ended story is the cautionary tale.
Is a price drop on Booking.com itself covered?
No. The claim compares your reservation against a lower price on another website (O3). A rate cut on Booking.com's own listing is not a price-match case.
The remedy is simpler, and it runs on one question: is your rate free to cancel? If yes, book the new, cheaper rate, then cancel the old booking before its deadline (O3). That is the safe order from above — new booking first, old booking second.
This case is more common than people think. RatePunk's analysis of 28,000 tracked bookings found 57% saw a lower rate appear between booking and check-in (M1). Pruvo data puts the figure at roughly 40% of reservations (M2). Hotels cut rates when booking pace runs below the occupancy forecast (M3).
If your rate is non-refundable, a rebooking usually costs more than it saves (R2). A hotel chain best-rate guarantee may still pay — those compare other websites and add a bonus when approved (C1–C5). See marriott best rate guarantee for the claim windows. And read free cancellation vs non refundable hotel before your next booking.
Sample: a Booking.com rate over five days
Illustrative dataThe figures above are sample numbers. On a free-cancellation rate, that drop is a rebooking. Book the €486 rate, then cancel the €612 booking before its deadline. On a non-refundable rate, rebooking means paying for both rooms (R2).
How do you file a claim — the exact checklist
| Step | What to do | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Find the offer on another website | Same room, dates and terms as your booking |
| 2 | Screenshot the whole offer | Include price, room details, dates and cancellation terms |
| 3 | Copy the direct link | The offer must be online when Booking.com checks (O1) |
| 4 | Open your confirmation page | Use the "Found this room cheaper elsewhere?" link (O1) |
| 5 | Or contact Customer Service | Send link and screenshot with the reservation number |
| 6 | Keep every reply | You may need the evidence after your stay (O1) |
Before you file, check the competing offer for traps. Look at taxes and fees shown separately, currency differences and member-only prices that need a login. Also compare breakfast and board, and pay-at-property versus prepaid rates (R4). A "cheaper" rate with different terms is not the same room product.
What to say when you contact them
Keep it factual and short. Use this template:
"I booked reservation [number] on [date] for [hotel], [room type], [dates], [guests]. I have found the identical room, same dates and same cancellation terms, on [site] at [price]. Link and screenshot attached. I would like the price matched under We Price Match."
Send the link and the screenshot together. The other offer must be online and available when Booking.com checks it (O1).

FAQ
Does a price drop on Booking.com itself qualify for We Price Match? No. The claim compares your booking against a lower price on another website (O3). If the drop is on Booking.com, the route is book the new rate and cancel the old one (R1).
What proof does Booking.com ask for? A link and a screenshot of the cheaper offer, showing the same room, dates and cancellation policy (O1). Send them together with your reservation number.
Will Booking.com pay the difference? It decides at its sole discretion. It may amend your reservation price, or handle the difference after your stay (O1). File early and keep the evidence.
How long do I have to file a claim? File as soon as you find the cheaper offer. The other offer must be online and bookable when Booking.com checks it (O1).
My rate is non-refundable. What can I do? A rebooking usually costs more than it saves (R2). A hotel chain guarantee may still pay, if you booked direct and the claim window is open (C1–C5).
Is it worth watching a booking I made months ago? Yes. Early bookings have the most time for the rate to move (M3). Watch until your free-cancellation deadline and then stop. A free watch can do that for you — see hotel price drop alert free.
Want it watched for you? Add your booking at app.hotelhops.com — free, and a specialist helps you rebook. You can also read how the watch works first.
