Short answer: Hotwire's Low-Price Guarantee covers Hot Rate hotel bookings only. Find the identical hotel, dates and room type cheaper and publicly bookable within 24 hours of booking, and Hotwire refunds the difference. Your original reservation stays in place, and it is one refund per household per six weeks (O9).
Hotwire's guarantee is narrower than most travellers expect. It is not a general price promise, and it does not touch your reservation. It is a refund of the gap, on one kind of booking, inside a short window (O9). Read the conditions before you count on it.
Do this now

- Confirm the booking is a Hot Rate. The guarantee applies to Hot Rate hotel bookings only (O9).
- Note the hotel name now that it is revealed, and find the identical dates, room type and bed type (O9).
- Check the competing rate is publicly bookable. AAA, AARP, corporate, group and loyalty rates do not count (O9).
- Screenshot it and copy the link while the rate is still live (O9).
- Claim inside 24 hours of booking. Hotwire's own pages disagree on the window, so treat 24 hours as the limit (O9).
- Leave the original booking alone. The refund does not cancel it, and nothing needs cancelling (O9).

What the Hotwire Low-Price Guarantee Hot Rate covers
A Hot Rate is an opaque booking: the hotel is not named before you commit (O9). The guarantee is attached to that product and to nothing else (O9).
Everything outside that lane sits outside the guarantee. Cancelling your booking does not create a claim, and a claim does not cancel your booking (O9). When Hotwire approves one, it refunds the difference and leaves your reservation exactly as it was (O9).
Then the rate exclusions. The comparison has to be available to the general public. AAA, AARP, corporate, group and loyalty rates are all excluded (O9), which rules out the cheaper prices people find behind a login. If the competing rate needs a membership number, it is not a comparison for this guarantee.
Why the 24-hour clock decides everything
The guarantee gives you 24 hours from booking (O9). Hotwire's own pages do not agree on that number: the legal terms say 24 hours, while one help-centre article describes the claim link showing for 48 (O9). Treat 24 as the limit. A claim built on the longer number may not exist when you file it.
Twenty-four hours is short. Your rate is compared against a market that moves all day (O9). The sooner you look, the more likely the identical public rate is still there to screenshot.

Illustrative, hours after bookingWhat "identical" means after a blind booking
The hotel name is only revealed after you book (O9). That makes the comparison easier in one way and harder in another. Easier, because you now know exactly which property to search. Harder, because the room and bed type have to match too, not just the hotel and the dates (O9). A standard room and a deluxe room in the same building are not the same booking, and the guarantee is written around identical bookings (O9).
So build the comparison carefully. Open the hotel's own page and the large booking sites, put the same dates in, and check the room name and bed configuration line by line. A cheaper rate for a different room is not a cheaper rate for your room (O9, R4).
What the guarantee does not do
Three limits are worth saying plainly.
- It does not cancel or change your reservation (O9).
- It does not cover bookings that are not Hot Rates (O9).
- It does not pay twice: one refund per household per six-week period (O9).
The second limit is the one people miss. The guarantee is tied to the opaque product, not to the Hotwire name on your confirmation (O9). Check the booking type before you spend an evening building a claim.
If the 24 hours have gone
Then the guarantee is closed, and what remains depends on the rate you bought (R2). Hotwire's guarantee works by refunding the difference rather than by cancelling and rebooking (O9). That is the lever it gives you, and it expires with the window.
On a flexible rate, the safe order still applies. Confirm the new rate matches the old one on hotel, room, board, guests and dates, and is also free to cancel. Book it. Wait for the confirmation. Only then cancel the old booking, before its deadline (R1). Most free-cancellation deadlines fall 24 to 72 hours before check-in (R3).
How much money is usually at stake? RatePunk's analysis of 28,000 bookings found a lower rate appeared on 57% of them (M1). Fermata's analysis of 92,235 room-stays found a lower publicly bookable rate on 54.2% of stays, with a median drop of 8.2% among those that fell (M7). A small gap on a two-night stay may not justify the effort. A gap of a few hundred on a week does.
Before you book a Hot Rate next time
Two things make the next drop easier to recover.
The first is knowing the booking type before you pay. If the rate is not a Hot Rate, the guarantee is not there (O9), and your fallback is the cancellation policy (R2).
The second is flexibility. A free-cancellation rate keeps the safe order available until its deadline (R1, R3). That is the whole logic behind watching a booking: the price can only help you while you can still act on it (H11). You can read how the free watch works before you book.
If the rate is flexible and the booking is already made, a watch does the remembering for you. The mechanics are in how a free hotel price alert works.
If you are still choosing between booking sites, Priceline is a useful contrast. Its guarantee can pay when the site's own price falls (O8), while Hotwire's fires only on an identical public rate elsewhere (O9). That comparison is in how the Priceline Best Price Guarantee works.
And if a site has no guarantee left at all - Expedia and Hotels.com ended theirs on 28 July 2026 (O4) - the rebooking route is the only route. It is covered in hotel price dropped after booking.

FAQ
Does Hotwire refund the difference if the price drops? Yes, on Hot Rate hotel bookings, if you find the identical hotel, dates and room type cheaper and publicly bookable within 24 hours of booking (O9). The refund does not cancel your reservation (O9).
Is a Hotwire Hot Rate refundable? The guarantee refunds a price difference; it is not a cancellation (O9). Whether you can cancel at all depends on the terms of the rate you bought (R2).
How long do I have to claim? 24 hours from booking, and treat that as the limit. Hotwire's legal terms say 24 hours, while one help article mentions 48 (O9).
Do member or loyalty rates count as a cheaper price? No. The comparison must be available to the general public, and AAA, AARP, corporate, group and loyalty rates are excluded (O9).
Can I claim more than once? One refund per household per six-week period (O9). Plan around that if you book several Hot Rates in a season.
What if the cheaper rate appears after 24 hours? The guarantee window is closed. If your rate is flexible, rebook in the safe order and cancel the old booking before its deadline (R1, R3) - the sequence is in how to rebook a hotel at a lower price. If it is not flexible, the drop is not recoverable (R2).
