Short answer: Chain best-rate guarantees pay when you find your room cheaper on another website. The window is short — usually 24 hours of booking. Marriott and Hilton add 25% off the matched rate; Hyatt and IHG pay points. None cover the hotel's own price falling later, so keep a free-cancellation rate and watch.
That is the short version. The detail below decides whether a claim gets paid — or denied on a technicality.
Do this now

- Check where you booked. These guarantees apply to bookings made direct with the chain, not through an OTA (C1–C5).
- Find the identical room on another website. Same hotel, room and bed type, guests, dates, inclusions and cancellation policy (C1).
- Save the evidence. Copy the link and screenshot the offer while it is still live. It must be available when the chain checks (C2).
- File within 24 hours of booking. Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt all run that window (C1–C3).
- If approved, you get the match plus a bonus. Marriott and Hilton add 25% off the matched rate; Hyatt and IHG pay points (C1–C4).
- If denied, switch routes. A free-cancellation rebook is the fallback — see below (C6).
The guarantees compared
The Marriott Best Rate Guarantee is the benchmark. Book direct, find a cheaper rate for the identical room on another site, and file within 24 hours (C1). The other chains work the same way, with different payouts.
| Chain | What you get if approved | Filing window | Main denial triggers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marriott | Match + extra 25% off (20% at Design Hotels) or 5,000 Bonvoy points (C1) | Within 24 hours of booking; at least 24 hours before check-in (C1) | Room, bed type, guests (up to 2), inclusions, dates or cancellation policy do not match (C1) |
| Hilton | Match + an additional 25% off the room rate (C2) | Within 24 hours of booking; no claims after check-in (C2) | Competing rate under 1% lower; not available when reviewed; different accommodations or terms; more than one claim per booking (C2) |
| Hyatt | 20% off the matched rate or 5,000 World of Hyatt points (C3, secondary source) | Within 24 hours of booking on Hyatt.com (C3) | Check Hyatt's current terms — details come from a third-party comparison (C3) |
| IHG | Rate match + 5X IHG One Rewards points, capped at 40,000 (C4, secondary source) | Online claim form only (C4) | Must have booked the lowest available IHG rate (C4) |
| Wyndham | Match + 3,000 points (C5, secondary source) | Not within 48 hours of arrival; one claim per person per month (C5) | Competing rate must be at least $1 lower (C5) |
Marriott and Hilton publish their rules directly. The Hyatt, IHG and Wyndham rows come from a published comparison — verify them before filing (C3–C5). All rows checked as of October 2026.
Take a $400 room. An extra 25% off is about $100 back, on top of the rate match itself (Sample arithmetic, C1, C2). Hyatt's 20% version is roughly $80 (C3).

Illustrative dataWhy does a best-rate guarantee get denied?
Most denials are mismatches, not price disputes. The comparison rate must match the same hotel, room and bed type, and guests (up to two for Marriott). Dates, inclusions and cancellation policy must match too (C1). It must also sit on a site that is not the chain's own (C1).
Hilton adds more tests. The competing rate must be at least 1% lower and still available when Hilton reviews it (C2). The accommodations and terms must match, claims stop after check-in, and it is one claim per booking (C2).
The quiet killer is a "cheaper" room that is not the same room. Watch for a smaller bed, no breakfast, prepaid versus pay at property, or a non-refundable rate against your flexible one (C1, C2, R4).
The second killer is timing. The window is 24 hours from booking, so a rate you spot on day three is usually too late (C1–C3). The size of the gap does not matter.
To file cleanly:
- Match every detail before you submit (C1).
- Take the screenshot while the offer is live (C2).
- File inside the 24-hour window, never after check-in (C2).
- Keep it to one claim per booking (C2).
A message that works:
"I booked reservation [number] at [hotel] on [date] for [dates], [room type], [guests]. I have found the identical room, same dates and same cancellation terms, on [site] at [price]. Link and screenshot attached. Please match it under your best-rate guarantee."
Do the guarantees cover the hotel's own price falling later?
No. Every chain guarantee compares your booking against another website, inside a short window (C6). When the hotel itself lowers its rate three weeks later, no guarantee applies. The claim window closed long ago.
For that case, one route works: a rate with free cancellation. The safe order: book the new lower rate first, then get the new confirmation. Only then cancel the old booking before its deadline (R1). Non-refundable rates cannot be rebooked without losing money, so the watch matters less there (R2).
How to rebook a hotel at a lower price walks through the order step by step. Free cancellation vs non-refundable explains why the flexible rate is usually the one to hold. And if the drop is on a booking you already made, start with hotel price dropped after booking.
That is also what a watch does for you. HotelHops tracks the rate on your existing booking, free, and helps you rebook when it falls (H2, H5).
What if you booked through Booking.com or Expedia?
Booking.com runs its own version. "We Price Match" refunds the difference if you find your reservation cheaper on another website after booking (O1). The same-room conditions apply. The claim needs a link and a screenshot, filed via the confirmation page or Customer Service (O1).
If the price drops on Booking.com itself, it is not a claim. Book the new rate and cancel the old one instead (O3). Booking.com price dropped after booking lists the exclusions that catch people out.
Expedia and Hotels.com ended their Hotel Price Guarantee on 28 July 2026 (O4). New bookings there have no price-match route at all. What works after Expedia's guarantee ended covers the alternatives.

FAQ
How long do I have to file a Marriott best-rate claim? Within 24 hours of booking, and at least 24 hours before standard check-in (C1). Hilton and Hyatt use the same 24-hour window (C2, C3).
What does Hilton's price match guarantee pay? The lower rate plus an additional 25% off the room rate. The competing rate must be at least 1% lower and still available when Hilton reviews it (C2).
Why was my best-rate guarantee denied? Usually a detail mismatch: a different room or bed type, fewer inclusions, another cancellation policy. Or the rate was gone when the chain checked (C1, C2). Timing is the other common cause.
Do these guarantees cover a price drop on the hotel's own site? No. They compare other websites only, inside a short window (C6). For later drops, the route is a free-cancellation rate plus a rebook (R1).
Can I claim if I booked on Booking.com instead? Yes — Booking.com's We Price Match covers a cheaper price for the same reservation on another website (O1). A drop on Booking.com itself is not a claim (O3).
What if I already missed the 24-hour window? The guarantee is gone for that booking (C1–C3). If your rate is free to cancel, watch the price and rebook lower before the deadline (R1).
