> **Short answer:** Expedia and Hotels.com ended their Hotel Price Guarantee on 28 July 2026, and no replacement has been announced. Bookings made before that date still qualified under the old terms. What remains: a refundable rate, a cancel-and-rebook before the deadline, and hotel chain guarantees on direct bookings.

That is the situation in four sentences. The Expedia price guarantee ended on 28 July 2026, but other routes to a lower price still exist. You just have to use them in the right order. New to rebooking? Start with the [hotel price dropped after booking](https://www.hotelhops.com/blog/hotel-price-dropped-after-booking/) playbook.

## Do this now

1. **Check your booking date.** If you booked before 28 July 2026, the old Hotel Price Guarantee may still apply to that reservation (O4).
2. **Open your confirmation email** and find the free-cancellation deadline — date, time and the hotel's local time zone.
3. **Compare today's rate** on Expedia, Hotels.com, the hotel's own website and one other site. Note each number.
4. **If your rate is refundable, book the cheaper rate first.** Match the same hotel, room, board, guests and dates, and make sure it is free to cancel (R1).
5. **Wait for the new confirmation**, then cancel the old booking before its deadline (R1). Check that no fee was charged.
6. **If your rate is non-refundable**, look at a hotel chain guarantee instead. The claim window is often just 24 hours from booking (C1–C5).

## What exactly ended, and when?

Expedia and Hotels.com ended their Hotel Price Guarantee on 28 July 2026 (O4). The change arrived with the One Key overhaul of Expedia's rewards program. No replacement guarantee has been announced, as of October 2026 (O4).

Under the old policy, Expedia refunded or credited the difference when you found the same room cheaper elsewhere. That route is closed for bookings made after the end date (O4). If your booking predates 28 July 2026, it still qualified under the old terms (O4).

One nuance, as of October 2026 (O7). The end was not the same clean cut for every traveller. People who joined One Key before 31 October 2025 may still qualify on eligible bookings; anyone who joined on or after that date does not. In Canada, Hotels.com says the guarantee stopped applying to new standalone bookings from 17 August 2026\. It is region- and enrolment-date-specific — check your own region's page before assuming either way (O7).

## What replaced the Expedia price guarantee?

Nothing — not at Expedia, and not at Hotels.com (O4). What is left is a patchwork of routes run by different companies. Each one covers a different case.

| Route | What it covers | The catch |
| -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Refundable rate + rebook | A drop on any site, including Expedia itself (R1) | You must act before the free-cancellation deadline |
| Booking.com We Price Match | The difference if the same room is cheaper on another website (O1) | Exclusions apply — opaque sites, loyalty prices, partner offers (O2) |
| Agoda Best Price Guarantee | Match or refund when another site is cheaper (O5) | Agoda decides refund versus AgodaCash, and you need evidence |
| Hotel chain guarantees | Match plus a bonus when you book direct (C1–C5) | Short windows, often 24 hours from booking |
| Price tracking | Alerts when the rate moves (O6) | Tracking does not rebook for you |

Notice the pattern. Expedia's guarantee was one company's promise, and it ended overnight (O4). An independent watch on your booking keeps working whatever any site decides. See [booking.com price dropped after booking](https://www.hotelhops.com/blog/booking-com-price-drop-what-to-do/) for the closest thing still live at a big OTA.

## The route that survives: refundable rate + rebook

| Step | Action | Why it matters |
| ---- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------- |
| 1 | Check the new rate matches — same hotel, room, board, guests, dates, and free cancellation (R1) | A cheaper rate for a different room is not a saving |
| 2 | Book the new rate and keep both bookings open | You hold the room before you give one up |
| 3 | Wait for the new confirmation email | A booking is not real until it is confirmed |
| 4 | Cancel the old booking before its deadline (R3) | After the deadline you are committed |
| 5 | Check the cancellation email for fees (R1) | You want a zero-fee confirmation in writing |

Never cancel the old booking before the new one is confirmed (R1). Free-cancellation deadlines are set by the property — typically 24 to 72 hours before check-in (R3). The clock usually runs on the hotel's local time. The full mechanics are in [how to rebook a hotel at a lower price](https://www.hotelhops.com/blog/how-to-rebook-hotel-lower-price/).

Booking early on a free-cancellation rate locks in availability, and the price can only help you from there (T5). Before you rebook, check the new rate for traps. Look at taxes and fees shown separately, currency differences and member-only prices needing a login. Also compare breakfast and pay-at-property versus prepaid terms (R4).

#### Sample: an Expedia booking over eight days

Illustrative data

Booked€540

Day 3€504

Day 6€468

Day 8€450

The numbers above are sample figures. On a refundable rate, that drop is exactly what the rebooking route handles. Book the €450 rate, then cancel the €540 booking before its deadline. On a non-refundable rate, rebooking means paying for both rooms (R2). This is not rare. Pruvo data puts rate drops at roughly 40% of reservations, with an average saving of about $60 (M2). RatePunk's analysis of 28,000 bookings found 57% saw a lower rate appear (M1).

## Do bookings made before 28 July 2026 still qualify?

Yes. Bookings made before the end date still qualified under the old Hotel Price Guarantee terms (O4). If you booked before 28 July 2026, check your confirmation and contact Expedia about that reservation.

For bookings made after that date, there is no Expedia guarantee to claim against. The refundable rebooking route above is what remains (O4, R1).

## Is there a free way to watch the price?

Yes. Google Hotels tracks prices for an individual property and sends email alerts when the rate changes (O6). It just does not rebook for you — see [google hotels price tracking](https://www.hotelhops.com/blog/track-hotel-prices-google-hotels/). [hotel price drop alert free](https://www.hotelhops.com/blog/hotel-price-drop-alert-free/) covers the free options in more detail.

HotelHops watches the price on a booking you already made, for free (H1, H2). It monitors bookings made anywhere — Booking.com, Expedia, or direct with the hotel (H3). When the rate drops, a specialist contacts you and helps you rebook (H5). Do not cancel the original reservation until that specialist reaches out (H5). Read [how the watch works](https://www.hotelhops.com/?ref=hotelhops.com#how-it-works) first if you want the detail.

The watch is only useful until your free-cancellation deadline. After that, the price can drop all it likes — you are committed (H11).

## FAQ

**Did Expedia replace the Hotel Price Guarantee with anything?** No. No replacement has been announced, as of October 2026 (O4).

**Does Hotels.com still have a price guarantee?** It depends on when you joined One Key and where you book. The guarantee ended for new bookings on 28 July 2026 (O4), but members who joined One Key before 31 October 2025 may still qualify on eligible bookings (O7). Check your region's page.

**I booked on Expedia before 28 July 2026\. Can I still claim?** Bookings made before the end date still qualified under the old terms (O4). Check your confirmation and contact Expedia for that reservation.

**My Expedia rate is cheaper now than when I booked. What can I do?** If your rate is refundable, book the new rate, then cancel the old one before its deadline (R1). If it is non-refundable, the difference is usually lost (R2).

**Which big booking site still has a price match?** Booking.com's We Price Match is still live, as of October 2026 (O1), and Agoda has its Best Price Guarantee (O5). Both compare against another website, not their own site (O3).

**Is it safe to book the new rate before cancelling the old one?** Yes, as long as the new rate is also free to cancel. You hold two bookings briefly, then cancel the old one after the new confirmation arrives (R1).

**Want it watched for you?** Add your booking at [app.hotelhops.com](https://app.hotelhops.com/login?lang=en&ref=hotelhops.com) — free, and a specialist helps you rebook.
